A new beginning

Plan and  Prepare  means so many things...

Peg and  I have  been planning  on heading  to Arizona  as snowbirds when we retire  for  years. Last  year we  decided that we should  probably head down with the  horse and  see if this is something  that is  really going to work for us.
We would  like to travel around the southern states of this  beautiful country during  the  winter months and  during the  Summers  head  North  to our  Horse  Camp in Lyman Washington and  also visit  our  friends  to the  North  in British  Columbia. Sounds  easy enough  but, how easy  will it  actually  be?
In a week, We'll be heading  out to Wickenburg Arizona for our  longest trip with our  Horses  Jake ( my  Quarter horse  Gelding) and Chief (Peg's  Leopard Appy Gelding). This blog  will share  our adventures an share  some  of the  things  that  we have  done to prepare for this adventure.
It might  even share  some  things that might  help you in planning  and  preparing  for your next big Adventure.

  2. Thanks Liam, These stories are mainly about what the planning process has been for the trip we are about to embark on and what are some of the things that we've had to do. The new beginnings part is just that. This is all part of Peg and My dreams to become snowbirds and travel the South with our horses in the winter months and head North for the Summer. There are a lot of places on our "bucket List(s) and this will become a good format to share those "rides" with all of our friends and family. I hope that you'll enjoy the "ride".

  3. Look forward to seeing you guys down here. Rain thunder and lighting yesterday but temperatures will be up into the high 70's by wednesday. What day are you leaving. Do you want us to meet you in Wickenburg for a few rides before heading this way??

    1. That's up to you guys. Our plan is to start there getting the horses acclimated. We can meet up after that if you guys would like some company. We are all ears since it will be our first trip down there and realy don't know where anything is located. We'll stay at Julie's the first night on the road and plan on the fairgrounds in Ely the second.

  4. Good luck on your adventure!

You're going to love Arizona! Make sure you take a chance to ride the White Mountains up near Big Lake. Beautiful, wide open country. Camp anywhere, ride anywhere. Give me a heads-up occasionally and I may be able to point you to some excellent less-known, non-commercialized places to ride. With your camper/trailer rig, the world is yours!

Don't forget to post some news occasionally on the westerntrailrider.com forum, whenever you find a great trail to ride. We'd like to get them all on there for everybody to enjoy.

Also, be very careful with your load-leveler hitch when you pass through dips, such as entering and leaving gas stations. My dad nearly destroyed the trailer tongue on our horse trailer once doing that. We had to get it straightened and welded back together. The load-leveler puts tremendous stress on the trailer tongue, trying to keep things level, when passing through dips.

Drive careful, be good, and have fun!

    1. You're absolutely right Tony and I know what you're talking about! In fact that is what my post will be about tomorrow when I upload the photo's from my phone. There is an important story coming for those that use ez lift or Draw tite load leveling hitches that I found out about. I have used them lots when towing our RV but, not so much when towing the horse trailer. Partly because we never need them with the one ton dually and only hauling 3 horses. You are right about the dips too....
